I’ve coached women for years. I raised three children as a single mother for sixteen years. Now, as a tough old bird, I want to use my life experiences and Master’s Degree plus thirty-six hours of higher education to encourage, inspire and motivate you to reach your highest potential.
I want to share an extremely valuable concept that will serve as a guide for your future. I am so certain about this that I guarantee you that the results will surprise you.
Now, Discover Your Strengths by Buckingham and Clifton has been on my bookshelf for years. I keep coming back to it. It is loaded with information to personalize your life as you discover your strengths.
We tend to be acutely aware of our weaknesses. We struggle with our faults. Our education system or parenting may be responsible for this. However, that was then, this is now.
Concentrating on your strengths will bring power into everything you do. Most of us do not know what our strengths are. You may think, as I did, that I had to do with my life what I was praised for as a child, adolescent or college student.
My Spiritual Director, Janet Davis, gave me a gem when she told me, “Things that feed us as a child becomes our survival mode. It’s the only life we know, so the only life we can imagine.” Your adult life and adult strengths may be different than you thought they were.
In Now, Discover Your Strengths the authors expand on forty-two themes or strengths. You may even take their Strength Finder Profile. If you can be completely honest with yourself using this book can change your life. To do this you must avoid delusion.
“This occurs when you keep acting, keep failing, and don’t realize it. . . Delusion plus denial is a lethal combination.”
Did you gain fame in high school and never take the adult path, but kept living in the past?
“If your sense are numbed with delusion and denial, you will stop looking for these true strengths and wind up living a second-rate version of someone else’s life rather than a world class version of your own.” (p. 128)
I suggest you start by listing areas in which you have excelled as an adult. How have any of these applied in your work? What can you do to apply your strengths in your life?
