I was staying in a high rise Hilton and would’ve preferred to be anywhere else on the planet. My grown son, Damon, was going through a terribly dark time in his life. I had traveled across two states to be near him in Jackson, Mississippi for a few days.
Visiting the local Barnes and Noble seemed like a pleasant diversion from the heavy mother’s heart I was feeling. I picked up the Jackson coffee table book. As I flipped though the glossy pages, I saw the machine tools at Eaton Industries. Damon was born with a talent for machinery. I dreamed, and yes, prayed, that he might work for such a company someday. Under the circumstances that seemed like a pipe dream. Today he was working in a machine shop that was more like a dark, dirty cave than a progressive company. He had the talent and skill but his life had become derailed and things were not as promising as they might be.
In the following years he recovered and married. They had a nice house and two perfect children. And he never complained about the job.
Then one day 40,000 feet in the air, in the clouds, a miracle encounter occurred. On an airplane a man named Bobby mentioned to the young man who happened to be sitting next to him that he was looking to hire someone who could handle 5-dimensional design in his place of business. His fellow passenger said, without a doubt that he needed to contact Damon. And it just so happened that Damon lived in Jackson where Bobby’s place of business was located.
So out of the blue Damon gets a call to interview at Eaton a company established by Joseph Eaton in 1911. After five days of intense interviews, he is hired. He is now the Lead Engineer.
Synchronicity of a Mother’s Prayerful Desire?
Of course I have prayed many prayers for my children. I know that there is no formula. There is no sure way to have things go our way. I never have liked it when well-meaning Christians say “Just pray about it.” As if that settles it and God will make everything go your way. Like the bumper sticker, “God said it, I believe it, that settles it.” In my opinion, this is shallow. Our God is much more than we can comprehend and when we truly worship her (or him if you insist) we ought to worship in spirit from a place of humility.
The next entry will be in two weeks.

Your story about Bobby sitting beside the young man on the plane who knew your son etc, is truly divine! At one time when I was much younger and much more foolish, I would have said everything had been a co-incidence. Just discovered your blog and also enjoyed the story about your brother Don. I can’t imagine anyone in the entire state of SC needing a robot the size of a football field, but stranger things have happened. Your brother was quite an accomplished inventor.
I genuinely appreciate your comments.
