Way back in the 1980’s, I decided to get a Master’s Degree from the University of Texas. No easy feat with three kids under 10. I took one step at a time.
- Pass the GRE with the required score. I did not.
- Apply for admission with letters of recommendation. I did.
- Register
- Find summer childcare for three children.
- Find housing for the summer.
Each of these is a story in itself. Each step took a leap of faith. I could have given up easily and said, ‘This isn’t meant to be.’ But instead, I kept moving forward.
I’m a very persistent person. I graduated in 1986.
In 1991, I was recruited to take a position as Teacher of the Visually Impaired for two school districts that had a state-approved co-op. I returned to UT for the certification. It was hard work, but the outcome was amazing.
I’m beginning a new writing project. Topic: Keep Moving Forward with Insight. I want people to know about three of my students who are now grown blind women.

I raised three children as a single mother before I remarried. I have experienced the potholes, pests, and perils of being the single head of the household. As an educator in regular and special education for 20 years, I founded Single Moms EmpowerEd, a nonprofit that supports single moms as they earn degrees that lead to employment. I’m also a Certified Professional Coach, and my stories have been published in several Christian books and magazines. My book, Living Learning Loving,is available on Barnes & Noble, Walmart, and Amazon.
