Grief Comes

Loss comes in many forms. It doesn’t have a schedule. It doesn’t have a limit.  It just comes whenever and stays as long as it needs. Sometimes it leaves you breathless. Sometimes you want to run. But it always leaves you a different person and it takes a strength you never thought you had.

Whether your loss is through divorce or death, and I’ve experienced both, it is never welcome and never a path you would choose to take. There are days I don’t think I will make it. There are days I try to forget everything that has happened just to get through the day. But normal will never be again.

They say I need to find my new normal. But I didn’t want a new normal. I liked my normal. How do you embrace something you never wanted?

I don’t know the answers to these questions but I know I won’t stop trying to find them. It won’t be easy, it won’t be quick but it is necessary to survive.

I have been involved in a very good Bible Study this past summer. I would recommend it to everyone who may be asking some of these same questions. It is called “You’ll Get Through This” from Max Lucado. It comes with a study guide with a video and also as a book. The study is based on these 6 simple sentences. But these simple sentences have changed my life.  I hope you can cling onto them and let them change yours too.

You’ll get through this.
It won’t be painless. It won’t be quick.
But God will use this mess for good.
In the meantime, don’t be foolish or naïve.
But don’t despair either.
With God’s help, you will get through this.
