Boundaries Can Improve Your Life

Family Culture
We only know our own family culture. It is our normal. When we grow up and establish another home, we can run into trouble. It makes me think of the old story about cooking a rump roast.
The new bride takes out a rump roast and proceeds to cut off the end of the roast before she puts it into the pot. Her husband asks, “Why did you cut off that perfectly good meat?” She replies, “Well, I’m not sure why but my mother always did it this way.” Her new husband was curious and didn’t want to let it go. He said, “Let’s ask your mother about this.” To please her new man, she called her mom. “Hey, mom! I have a question. You know how you always cut the end off the rump roast before you put it in the pot. Well, why did you do that?” She heard her mother giggle. “I did that because my pot was so small the roast wouldn’t fit.”
All of us develop ideas about life and how things should be done based on our families of origin. Our original family may have been dysfunctional, Yet as an adult, we may still not realize this was the case. For us it was normal. We know something isn’t right, but what?
