Luxuries & Necessities
“Most of the luxuries and many of the so-called comforts of life are not only not indispensable, but positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind.”
– Henry David Thoreau
There was a day when owning a television was a luxury. Then it was owning a computer. And then it was owning a cell phone.
When I see teenagers glued to their cell phones I wonder what would happen if they had to spend more time outdoors without technology. I’m sure they would feel extremely deprived and annoyed.
What about you? How long can you spend without technology? I know I feel lost or even incomplete without my cell phone. I wonder if Thoreau is correct when he said some of our “so-called comforts are. . . positive hindrances to the elevation of mankind.” I use technology almost constantly. Of course, I’m using it now as I type this blog.
I think it’s a matter of whether or not we allow the technology to replace the more important things of life. Walking the spiritual path demands we spend time on lifting our thoughts to a higher level or the “elevation” of womankind. This works best with time away from all distractions for at least a few minutes a day. I’ll share a challenge with you that Cheryl Richardson presented in an interview. “Go sit someplace where you will be uninterrupted and set an alarm for 10 minutes; train yourself to be the master of your own mind. Don’t let yourself get up. If you do this every day for two weeks, it will radically change your experience of the world and that will dramatically change your life.”
