You might say I’m a woman on a mission. Some might say “She’s obsessed!” Either way, I am passionate about making a way for single moms in southeast Texas to earn a practical degree.
Here is why –
Statistics tell us that children raised by a single parent (usually the mother) do not do as well as kids raised in a two-parent home. 70% of gang members, high school dropouts, teen suicides, teen pregnancies and teen substance abusers come from single mother homes.
25 Million children are growing up in homes without fathers.
That is 40% of the kids in America. In Texas, the figure is higher. It is 43%. In Jefferson County, Texas it is 44%.
90% of the welfare recipients are single mothers.
I was one of those statistics, a single mother of three for sixteen years. My children were also a statistic.
The one really significant advantage I had was – a college degree.
My Mission is Possible!
We can carry single mothers in SETX across the bridge from dependency to self-sufficiency.
Jackie Guillory is a first candidate. She is a single mother and grandmother who has a servants heart. With our support, she can complete her degree in sociology from Lamar University in two years.
We need community support. And yes, we need donations. We are praying for 100 donors giving $20 a month.
The Community Coalition is a 501 (c) 3 Nonprofit
I raised three children as a single mother before I remarried. I have experienced the potholes, pests, and perils of being the single head-of-household. As an educator in regular and special education for twenty years, I know a great deal about child development and how to handle kids. I am the founder of SMORE for Women, a nonprofit whose goal is Single Moms, Overjoyed, Rejuvenated, and Empowered. I’m also a Certified Professional Coach and my stories have been published in several Christian books and magazines. My book, Living Learning Loving is available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble online.
