An Apology says,
“I’m aware of my mistakes
and I don’t want to hurt you.”
It also demonstrates a humble spirit.
Have my children Heard me say, “I’m sorry” lately?
Children learn mostly by example. They repeat our words as soon as they begin speaking. They like to pretend to be grown up. They do whatever they see their favorite characters on TV do. It stands to reason that they need to see and hear us apologize.
It is not a sign of weakness to apologize to your children. Quite the opposite. You demonstrate strength when you can admit you’ve made a mistake and you are willing to say so.
Allow your children to see that you are human. Then they will be able to treat themselves with compassion as well as extend it to others.
